The Afcon Cup, also known as the Africa Cup of Nations, is one of the most popular and respected football competitions in Africa. The tournament is organized by the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF). It first started in 1957 with only 3 teams competing, namely Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt and was hosted by Sudan.
Since then, more teams have joined with every edition as its popularity and fame spread. In the 2019 edition, 24 teams participated in the competition for the first time in its history.
The tournament has been held every two years since 1968. However, it was switched to odd-numbered years in 2013. As more teams vied to take part in the competition, the need for qualifying rounds was felt to ensure that all the spots were filled with the best teams.
Over time, the tournament has served as an exhibit for African talent. Some of the biggest players in the game have first made their mark in the Afcon Cup, playing for their country before going on to achieve universal fame.
